Even though Britney Spears is no longer being controlled through her conservatorship, it seems that the singer’s legal troubles may not be officially over. Her mother, Lynne Spears, filed a petition with the court in November of 2021, requesting that Britney pay her $660,000 in legal fees. Lynne’s argument for the money is that she ended up with these fees due to hiring a team of people to help Britney break the conservatorship restrictions. Whether Lynne hired these people or has legal fees is not in dispute.

The counterargument, made by Britney’s attorney, is that Lynne Spears is a third party to the conservatorship, and there is nothing that entitles a third party to the funds of a conservatee’s estate, even if that third party hired attorneys and others to help with the matter. It was also pointed out by Britney’s attorney, Matthew Rosengart, that Britney has already paid out more than $1 million over the last 10 years for her mother to live in an expensive home.

In addition, Britney pays her mother’s utilities, property taxes, insurance, pest control, landscaping, and other bills, along with the repairs and maintenance on the property in which Lynne lives. All of those expenses over the past decade have totaled $1.7 million. A ruling hasn’t been made in the case, and it may take some time before a decision is reached. Britney is dealing with this issue during a time when she finally has freedom from her conservatorship, and plans to marry her fiancé.

While this lawsuit from her mother may be an additional source of frustration for Britney, it appears that most of the fallout from the end of her conservatorship has been resolved. That has allowed her to move on with her life and create a future. Hopefully, a ruling on this issue will come soon, freeing her to fully move forward with her plans.
