There are four parts to the plan, which is based on safety and personal responsibility, along with the value of preparation. Included in the plan is:

- A guide to conversations friends and family can start if they’re worried about someone they love
- An inventory guide, so owners can list where their firearms are and who should get them if a transfer is needed
- A legacy section, where owners can share information and memories, as well as passing knowledge along
The people who created the Firearm Life Plan hope that shooting ranges, gun shops, and gun industry groups will see the value of the plan, and start making it available to their patrons. By doing that, it’s possible to potentially save lives, and to make sure firearms are transferred safely and responsibly. Since nearly 42% of people over the age of 65 live in households that have firearms, there are plenty of people who could use this plan to make decisions.
Additionally, it’s estimated that as many as 60% of people who have dementia live in homes that have guns. Making sure these people are kept safe, especially as their condition declines, is one of the biggest benefits of having a firearm plan in place.
