Signs You’ve Jumped From Middle Class to Wealthy
November 22, 2023Remembering Sandra Day O’Connor
December 10, 2023Scientists at the biotech company Loyal, along with others companies and institutions, are working on medications that will extend dogs’ lifespans. One of the hardest things about owning and loving a dog is that their lives are so short compared to ours. This can make it very heartbreaking when you have years with a pet and then they’re suddenly not there anymore. Many people get another dog, but it’s not the same as having the one that they lost.
While the United Stats FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has acknowledged that companies like Loyal are making progress with the safety and effectiveness of these drugs, there are also some legal and ethical concerns about the process. If dogs live longer lives, there are worries that there will be overpopulation and more dogs that aren’t getting adopted. If someone still has their dog, they aren’t going to get another one to “replace” a pet that passed away.
Additionally, there could be a major increase in geriatric dogs that need care, and in dogs that have outlived their owners. Loyal has made it clear that the company isn’t looking to make dogs immortal, or give them lifespans that are comparable to humans. Instead, the goal is to increase healthy and happy years for dogs. This could make their overall life a few years longer, but it will also give them better health as they age, so they can have a higher quality of life.
Critics of the efforts suggest better veterinary care, making sure dogs get exercise, and keeping them at a healthy weight. Dogs also need plenty of mental stimulation, which can help keep them feeling and acting younger and happier in their golden years.
It remains to be seen whether longevity drugs from companies like Loyal will make their way to market, and how many extra years they may give to dogs. In the meantime, dog owners can help their dogs have good lives by spending plenty of quality time with them, keeping them active, and making sure they know how much they’re loved.
